Sierra Schumann
I grew up in Encinitas, on the San Diego coast, and I've loved painting and drawing for as long as I can remember. My high school specialized in the arts, so I took every class I could — and fell completely in love with creating.
That same school had a screen printing class, and that's where it clicked: I could put my art onto clothing and make it something everyone could wear. People started buying my pieces, and Sloopy began to take shape.
When Covid hit, I lost access to the screen printing studio — but I wasn't ready to stop making wearable art. Around then I noticed some bleach-stained towels that had turned the softest pink, and I thought it looked really cool. So I tried painting with bleach. It worked — and I've been hooked ever since, chasing the way bleach blooms across fabric.
I love wearable art because it brings together my two loves — art and fashion — and adds a little life and energy to our everyday.
There isn't really a step-by-step. For me it's one motion — I'm visualizing the design as I go, bringing whatever's in my mind straight onto the fabric. Sometimes I have an idea, but more often it's a feeling, and that feeling guides my hand.
It's less about thinking and more about translating what I feel directly into the piece. Some days I lean toward certain designs and feel uninspired by others — then it flips the next day. The design has to align with what I feel.
"Everyone is my walking museum — and seeing my pieces worn around the world is quite possibly the coolest feeling ever."
